Growing up in a small town in Eastern Nebraska, I was blessed to be able to walk to hunt pheasant and quail. Being from a non-hunting family, a birddog was out of the question; but friends and neighbors had Viszlas, German Shorthair Pointers, and of course, Labrador Retrievers and Springers. I was lucky enough to see all of these dogs work on birds.
Moving to Western Colorado in 2013 only opened up more and more opportunities for birds in varying terrain. As I bought my own dog, I began to spend many afternoons with a professional trainer. I was able to learn hands on from pointing labs, versatile dogs, and even some protection dogs. From there, I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with several professional retriever & pointer trainers.
As a personal trainer and past professor, teaching has been a part of my daily life for over 16 years. The transition from training people to training their dogs was a natural progression. Communication with dogs is more subtle than communicating with people. One thing about dogs, is they are honest to a fault. None of their behaviors are a lie or a cover-up. Everything they do has a purpose. When it comes to reading dogs, you have to watch for the subtle behaviors, then understand what it was that caused the behavior; then you have the thing to work on, not the action itself. Dogs, like people, have a personality that ties into a love language and a preferred learning style. Putting the pieces together for each dog is the “art” of dog training.
Creating a great dog is like creating a masterpiece. It starts with the best materials (genetics), then it requires skill, patience, practice/hard work, and a vision bigger than each individual brush stroke. Having trained dogs of many different breeds and for many different disciplines, has allowed me to build a skillset over time. I have trained and taken dogs all the way to the Invitational in NAVHDA, Regional Trials in NSTRA, and countless hunting dogs of all levels. It really is the small details & rewards I get from the dogs that make this such a passion of mine.

Kayla’s passion for dogs comes from a lifelong passion for animals. She spent her childhood caring for everything from kittens to sugar gliders! Even having a pet fox.
When she was introduced to bird dogs and bird hunting it was an immediate passion and perfect fit for her. She is the definition of a natural, her ability to read a dog and communicate with them on their level far exceeds her experience level. Bobby once said “I have never seen someone who had not owned dogs their whole life learn to communicate with a dog so fast” Her natural caring and attentive mind allows her to care for the dogs. Her tailgate checks are the most thorough you would ever see and she is able to tell when a dog is hurt or not feeling well before anyone else.
Although Bobby is the lead trainer and the expert on the method & solution to certain problems. Wild West Bird Dogs would not exist without Kayla. She is in charge of Social Media, Marketing, and organizing the chaos that is training dogs and puppies. In order for the dogs to succeed, organization is a must. She is the assistant for the advanced dogs being the second set of hands and feet that a good trainer needs. She shares the load on the puppy program with gun intro, bird contacts, and the basic obedience. All of which are the foundation for which great dogs are built on. As a guide she is second to none (even Bobby) She has hunted and guided all over the west putting dogs and people in the best situation to succeed. In fact she has guided in 4 states and been successful in each one. Her personality and expertise have a way of making each hunt memorable and one of enjoyment.
She has handled dogs in NAVHDA to max scores. She handles dogs in NSTRA field trials with a bunch of success she has multiple placements and open wins, even achieving an amateur champion.
If you send your dog to WWBD Kayla will undoubtedly leave her positive mark on that animal and help ensure it reaches its full genetic potential! She will also be the reason you see your dog on social media, and work to make sure you get videos and photos of your dog in action! She makes this facility the amazing experience it is.
